Blurred is looking for a smart and curious senior consultant with a strategic and creative mindset. This role does not require you to have ESG or sustainability experience, however you will have a keen interest in either and ideally have some experience of developing purpose-led campaigns. You must be willing to throw yourself in the deep end and learn from those around you, as well as taking the initiative and using other tools to develop your own knowledge.
It’s imperative that this person has a proven track record of leading, driving, writing and developing strategic and creative plans. You must be interested in the world around you, taking the initiative to learn when a subject sparks your curiosity and applying your knowledge to your work. You will thrive on development both personally and professionally, pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and stretching yourself.
Our purpose is depth, and this individual will be comfortable digesting and working with complex information and data; able to extrapolate the key insights and asking the right questions to get to the crux of the problem.
This individual will be a trusted partner to our clients with a proven track record of cultivating client relationships and possess a commercial mindset in relation to growth of clients. You will have gravitas and confidence to challenge opinions, which in turn, will add value and impact. You will be familiar with managing multiple clients and deadlines, always managing expectations.
An active interest in sustainability topics would be desired. Our business prides ourselves in the development of our people which of course includes subject matter insight, therefore we would ask you to be up for expanding your knowledge.
Communications, both verbal and written, are key for this role. The preference is that the candidate will have experience across the corporate and consumer comms space, with history of working on large brands / portfolios. Blurred has global outreach on several clients which is an area of development for the business. You would ideally bring international experience or want to develop your skill sets into global markets.
Level of previous experience
Blurred does not use typical agency job titles. For comparison, this role is designed for someone at an Account Director / Senior Account Director level, or a recently appointed Associate Director depending on the size of the agency and an individual’s experience.
Client/sector/audience experience
We are named Blurred because we fundamentally do not believe in the artificial distinctions between ‘consumer’, ‘corporate’ and ‘b2b’. We are looking for someone who has transferrable core communications and consultancy skills. The work is extremely varied with ESGP being at the heart of what we do. For reference however, this role is likely designed for someone who has leaned into both ‘corporate’ and ‘consumer’ disciplines rather than an all-out ‘consumer’ business.
Core attributes
We look for the following in attributes in Blurred team members:
Minimum criteria
The minimum requirements we are looking for within this role are:
Strategic and creative problem-solving – the ability to take any client brief, quickly understand the true nature of the challenge, and produce bold and transformative solutions. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate that they can tackle complex issues in a thoughtful and considered way and have demonstrable experience assisting with (or leading) on the development of brand strategy and creative plans.
Editorial media relations – as a comms business we create strategies and plans that are designed to engage media alongside other stakeholders. The candidate should be comfortable with media relations and experienced in liaising with top tier media and developing media strategies, angles and pitches.
Senior client handling – all members of our team must be seasoned client partners and the successful candidate will be expected to lean into senior client relations day to day, supporting the Consulting Director in doing so, often working with them to challenge and discuss technical issues related to their business. Example clients could include Chief Marketing Officer, Communications Director, Corporate Affairs Director or Sustainability Director. At Blurred, client servicing is client partnering, it is honest, collaborative, and democratic – our clients feel listened to and that we are part of their team, not separate. We build strong, open, respectful, and trusting relationships with our senior clients.
Problem-solving – the ability to take the client brief and quickly understand the nature of the challenge and objective.
Writing – everyone in Blurred must be able to write well, compellingly, and editorially. The candidate should be experienced in writing strong narratives and messaging and converting complex information into easily absorbed information written from an audience-led perspective. We proudly accept and include neurodiverse people – our own CEO is dyslexic. Please talk to us if this is the case.
Commercial nous – the successful candidate will have a sound commercial understanding and the ability to identify and unlock new opportunities from existing clients, both driving up income and keeping an eye on profitability.
Team management – take responsibility for the day-to-day delivery of work, helping to identify resourcing needs and manage and motivate the broader team to deliver the highest quality work, on time.
About Blurred
Our future is threatened by urgent environmental and societal risks. Every corporate and public citizen has the responsibility and capability to make a difference.
And the area where you have the greatest potential to do harm in the world is also the area where you have the greatest opportunity to do good.
Our work is built on the principles of ESGP, because we believe no organisation can have a credible, effective Purpose without first understanding the impact of its business on the Environment, on Society, and in terms of Governance.
From advising on the most technical elements of ESG right through to delivering the most creative expressions of Purpose, we help businesses be better.
And then, as communication experts, we make sure that story is seen and heard by all audiences, from investors and employees to policymakers and the public.
We won Best New Management Consultancy at the MCA’s Management Consulting Awards 2022, were a finalist for Consultancy of the Year at the EDIE Awards 2023 and we won Best Consultancy for Corporate and/or Financial Comms at PR Week’s Corporate, City & Public Affairs Awards 2023 and Corporate Consultancy of the Year at PRovoke’s EMEA Sabre Awards. We were also placed number 1 in PR Week’s 2022 ESG league tables.
We are also proud to have been named Best Consultancy to Work for by PRovoke Media in 2022 and 2023.
But we’re perhaps most proud of what we do to walk the talk in terms of values. We live our own purpose and values through the way we behave, from our public commitment to only work with companies making progress against the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, to being transparent about our commitment to diversity and reducing our own carbon footprint, to holding full Blueprint status (we’re extremely passionate about DEI), to holding Disability Confident level 2 certification and – finally – by being B Corps certified. In short, we walk the talk, and we only recruit people ready to do the same.
